You look stupid
Scenario
A psychic medium tries to uncover the truth behind her sister’s murder at the scene of the crime. The overall weirdness was made up of elements McCarthy “cherry-picked from horror tropes”. The wooden man was inspired by the Jewish folklore of the golem, a large clay figure that can be brought to life through rituals to do the bidding of its creator. Dani Timmins: Do I look stupid? Yana: Excuse me?
Dani Timmins: Do I look stupid? Yana: No. Dani Timmins: My sister and I were identical, so that must mean she didn’t look stupid. Shown, not explained right away
This film does a lot of things right. While there are a few scares, the scares are mostly in the atmosphere and situations that would easily scare anyone in a similar setting. This is the right way to do horror, with the idea of inspiring fear, as opposed to cheap reaction scares that are effective only because of loud noises. It starts right off with an impossible decision that effortlessly draws you in. Plus, there’s always something to focus on that constantly engages the audience.
Seen, not described
This results in mystery and suspense that will keep you interested throughout. Overall, an entertaining film, and the acting talent displayed by the entire cast is competent and appropriate. I only have two complaints. The first is that the motivations of some of the characters are practically nonsensical. One could argue that these people are essentially psychopaths, but even so, their choices are far too extreme to be believed.
The second is the final scene
Absolutely ridiculous. I can’t go into detail without spoilers, but while the concept is really cool, the execution was pretty weak. None of this ruined my overall enjoyment of the film, but there’s no lasting impression from it, which is a shame.
